Does the service cost anything?
Access Point is a free service, however, there may be a cost associated with the service if pharmaceuticals need to be prescribed as part of your treatment.
Do I need to live in the area to be eligible for the service?
No, however you will need to be able to travel to either our St Kilda or Fitzroy treatment centres for appointments.
Is there a specific treatment for amphetamine users?
No. Methamphetamine users comprise a broad range of people, with varying degrees of difficulty with their use. Some will have a strong reliance (with daily use or dependence) on the drug, use multiple drugs or inject their methamphetamine. Others may use the drug less often, but find their use has a significant effect on their personal or working lives, and are unable to stop or reduce their use without help. Treatment therefore needs to be tailored to each individual. In addition, Access Point provides treatment in partnership with each individual.
Treatment may involve any of the following combinations:
- psychological therapies such as supportive counselling, cognitive behavioural therapies, and relapse prevention education
- health promotion and harm reduction strategies such as education, screening and treatment aimed at reducing the harms of injecting, prevention of blood borne viral infection, and reducing the burden of sexual and reproductive ill health
- pharmacological treatments for withdrawal symptoms, mood disturbance and psychosis
- referral for community inpatient withdrawal for those requiring more intensive support to stop using
Studies to date have shown that, for people with problematic drug use, engagement in treatment of any kind provides better outcomes in comparison to those who do not seek treatment. Therefore, an important first step is to seek help.
How long does treatment take?
There is no clear guide as to how long treatment will take, as treatment is tailored for each individual. For example, some people will be highly motivated to stop or reduce their amphetamine use, and may require a shorter period of time in treatment. Others, such as those with more severe dependence on methamphetamines, or those using multiple drugs, may require a longer period of time in treatment. In addition, if for any reason, you feel you no longer require treatment, or are unable to continue in treatment at Access Point, you are free to stop and restart again at a time convenient to you.
Can I undertake my usual work or occupation during treatment?
Yes. However, as the clinic currently operates within working hours only (9am – 5pm), you may require some time away from your work. In these instances a medical certificate can be supplied to cover any missed work time.
Are details of my treatment or involvement with Access Point given to other persons?
Your treatment at Access Point is completely confidential. During your period of treatment with us, we may ask your permission to obtain additional information about past treatment provided by another health professional or agency. This is requested only in cases where past investigations or treatment are relevant to your methamphetamine use or your treatment at Access Point.
